Lode Runner Level Converter 1.0
=================================
What is it?
-----------
The Lode Runner Level Converter will convert levels created with
the original version of Lode Runner for the Macintosh to the
format used by Lode Runner: The Legend Returns. Once converted,
the levels may be used with the Macintosh, Windows, or MS-DOS
versions of Lode Runner: The Legend Returns, as all three use an
identical file format.
How do I use it?
----------------
Drag and drop the original level file on to the "LR Level Converter"
application. Wait a few moments as it processes the file. A new
file in the Legend Returns format will be created, with "(converted)"
appended to the file name. You can rename the new file whatever you
wish. It will now work with Lode Runner: Legend Returns. Alternately,
you can launch the Level Converter application, choose "Select File"
from the File menu, and point to the file you want converted.
Because Legend Returns isn't _exactly_ the same as the original
Lode Runner, some levels may not play the same as before.
If you are using version 1.0 of Legend Returns, you will need to add
exits to your levels after converting them. In the original, once all
the treasure was picked up you just had to get the Lode Runner to the
top row and you were done. In Legend Returns, there are specific exit
tiles. Use the editor to add them to the appropriate places in your
levels.
If you have a version later than 1.1.1, you do not need to add the
exits. Later versions of Legend Returns (on the Macintosh) allow
you to exit by moving to the top of the screen, just like the old
Lode Runner, if there are no exit tiles in the level.
(There are updaters available for the floppy and the CD-ROM versions
of Lode Runner: Legend Returns, which correct other bugs as well.)
What does it require?
---------------------
The level converter requires System 7.0 or later, and 512K of memory.
What was the original version of Lode Runner?
---------------------------------------------
Lode Runner was originally published by Broderbund Software. The first
version was for the Apple II. Later versions included the Atari 400/800,
Commodore 64, MS-DOS, Macintosh, Nintendo, TurboGrafix, various other
console machines, other forgotten computers (remember the Vic-20?), a
full stand-up arcade version, and, um, anything else you might imagine.
It's been everywhere.
The original Macintosh version was released in 1984 and was black and
white with simple sound effects. One of the first Macintosh games
released. If the copy protection is removed, it _still_ runs today, even
with System 7, 32-bit addressing, on the PPC, in 24-bit graphics mode, etc.
Amazing! Hats off to Glenn Axworthy for some very solid programming in
the first Mac version.
What are those extra level group files?
---------------------------------------
The original personal computer versions of Lode Runner that Broderbund
published included 150 levels. There was also a sequel called
Championship Lode Runner, which was the same game with 50 more levels,
all quite difficult, that players had sent to Broderbund.
All 200 of those levels are included here. Because the new Lode Runner
is not quite exactly the same as the original, not all the levels
are solveable. I haven't played them all to check them, but
rather than do so I decided to release them in their exact original form
so players may see them as they were and change them as they wish.
(The Championship levels are particularly tough - don't assume they're
unsolvable before you give up. Differences in play will generally be
related to timing. There are minor differences in Bungeling behavior as
well).
